The event

15th May 2020, 8.30-18.30

The PhD-day is an event that brings together PhD and undergraduate students from different fields of study, in order to facilitate research networking and exchange of knowledge inside the University of Florence.

This year the University of Florence will host the 11th edition of PhD–Day. The event is opened to ALL the PhD students of the University of Florence and welcomes the participation from all areas of study. PhD students will have the unique opportunity to share their work and find unexpected common interests while discussing their findings with colleagues from all departments and research institutes of the University of Florence.

Undergraduate students are also invited to follow the event. Indeed, this is an excellent opportunity for them to discover new and interesting topics, that could also become the object of their thesis. Furthermore, the PhD-Day11 is an opportunity to learn more about topics not usually covered during the course of studies.

The event will take place on May the 15th, 2020 at the Plesso Didattico Morgagni, Firenze.

During the event an attendance certificate will be released to all PhD students giving a talk or presenting a poster.

We are looking forward to see you soon at the PhD-Day11!

The Organizing Committee

About the sheep logo

The PhD Day was held for the first time in 2009 at the “Polo Scientifico” in Sesto Fiorentino, thanks to the efforts of some Physics and Chemistry PhD students. Long before the realization of the “Polo Scientifico” campus, in this area was common to spot a local sheep flock. Still nowadays these sheep keep grazing around the departments, unconcerned of what surround them.

Indeed, the presence of departments and research centers has never deterred the shepherd to change his usual route. So, we are used to wait for sheep crossing while driving, to spot the signs of their shift through the various connecting alleys, to attend lectures together with about twenty sheep huddled near the window looking for shelter from the summer heat.

For all these reasons, the choice of a sheep as logo for the PhD Day has been natural. For us, the sheep represents the determination, the persistence and the longing for collaboration which mark the PhD student. Careless of resignations, retirements, discoveries and excellence, the PhD student is the foundation and the engine of research.

Fundamental, but still not considered enough.
